This brief provides an assessment and recommendations to the federal government with respect to the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. Through this brief, it is our intention to shed light on the intersection of environmental concerns and poverty. While The Government of Canada is working to prioritize and strategize Canada’s plan for addressing environmental issues, the Canadian Poverty Institute asks the federal government to consider strategies that would inform equitable policy, speak to the inter-connected nature of the environment and poverty, and plan for long-term sustainability for all Canadians. This brief provides background and recommendations to The City of Calgary for the development of its Environment Strategy. As poverty and the environment intersect in important ways, it is critical that Calgary’s Environment Strategy embody principles of Environmental Justice where all people, regardless of gender, age, race or socioeconomic status, are entitled to equal protection under environmental laws and to participate in environmental decision making in their community.
